In a large turnout to one of the biggest MMA fights in the Bay Area, Cung Le took home the Strikeforce middleweight championship by defeating the legendary Frank Shamrock. More than 16,000 fans packed into HP Pavilion to watch what would be a great fight between Le and Shamrock.
The fight ended after the third round with Shamrock calling the fight due to a kick from Le that broke his arm. Watching the fight it was hard to tell that his arm was broken, it wasn’t until the post interview when you could see Shamrock grimace from the pain. Cung Le is still undefeated picking up another win to go (6-0). Weeks before the fight Shamrock explained his game plan was to Stand up and trade with Le. This is what most likely led to his loss. Shamrock did attempt to takedown Le early in the fight only to be thwarted by Le.
After that it was Cung Le that attacked with strikes, counter-punches and plenty of kicks. In the post fight interview Shamrock was clearly in pain. “Cung Le broke by right arm, ” he said. “He’s a better man. He’s the champion.”
Le also commented on the fight. “I knew I caught him good in the hand, ” Le said of Shamrock attempts to fend off head kicks. “He kept blocking, so I kept aiming at that part of the wrist”
It was an awesome display of fighting skills that had the audience riled up from beginning to end. Below is the final round that led to Cung Le’s win.
